Point Roberts without borders – easy travel with San Juan Airlines

It’s safe to say that 2020 has been a challenge. Remember when we couldn’t get toilet paper? Groceries? Now imagine not being able to get to your house. That’s a tough reality for a lot of people right now in the unique peninsula of Point Roberts, Washington.

Point Roberts is a quirky part of the United States – a square-shaped area that shares three sides of its border with the Salish Sea and one side with Canada. Just under 1,200 residents call this quiet, secluded coastal area home—while hundreds more own vacation homes, boats, and other properties. With the US/Canadian border closed due to the current pandemic, the only way in or out is by boat or airplane. If you do have a boat, you’re facing at least 10 miles of open ocean.

That’s where we come in. San Juan Airlines has been operating scheduled flights in and out of Point Roberts for more than five years and chartering for many years before that. With residents mostly using our flights to get to and from Bellingham, Washington for doctor visits, grocery runs, or catching flights from Bellingham International, we stay busy on our Tuesday scheduled run.

We’ve seen a huge increase in passenger traffic since the border closure, not only from residents needing to get out of Point Roberts for essential business, but also Canadian residents needing to get in to take care of their property. Weather can be harsh in the Pacific Northwest, and houses and boats need to be maintained and prepared for the changing seasons. San Juan Airlines can currently fly Canadian passengers to and from Canada during the border closure, and it’s become a hugely popular and very simple option to charter flights to Point Roberts out of Boundary Bay and Abbotsford, British Columbia.

It feels good to know that during these uncertain times, we are doing a small part in helping folks with essential services. If you need help in planning a trip into Point Roberts, whether you’re in Canada or the US, give us a call and #YoureThere.
